PDC-systems (production data capturing) record the production data and make it available for further operations. As an extension to the PDC-concept, a MDC-system (machinery data capturing) allows for monitoring of machines to see when they are running and when they are idle. As decisions to invest in new machines and systems are based on real running times, the MDC-system aids rational decision making. Modern MDC-systems can observe processing steps and machine downtimes automatically and record the condition of any machine. With the help of this information, an analysis about interferences and idle times can be carried out to limit the degree of under-utilisation. MDC-systems can determine exact machine efficiency levels at any given moment in time.
